PASSIVE ORTHODONTICS
Retention Phase

After the so-called “active” phase of orthodontic treatment, it is essential to maintain the results achieved.
This means holding the teeth in place—a process known as retention.
Retention ensures that your teeth stay in their final, corrected position.
If you want to avoid your teeth shifting again—or needing a new treatment later on—it’s crucial to follow this step carefully.
Retention typically includes:
- A bonded wire on the inner (lingual) side of the teeth
- Custom-made passive aligners for stabilization
FAQ
Passive stabilization aligners should be worn every night during the first year, then once or twice a week for life to maintain results.
The bonded wire is fixed and, ideally, should also be kept for life.
Teeth shift throughout life—just like the rest of the human body.
Once an appliance is removed, minor tooth movements are inevitable.
To minimize these shifts, retention is essential for everyone.
It’s important to schedule an appointment as soon as possible to have them replaced quickly and avoid any relapse.
Use cold water only—hot water can warp them.
Ideally, clean them with an old toothbrush and dish soap.
During the first two years, it’s recommended to check your retainers every 3 to 4 months.
After that, if everything is stable, a yearly check-up is sufficient.
